Note: NB5s recently supplied free by Exetel with an upgrade to ADSL2 are likely to have a problem which causes them to hang after 29 hours online.
See this topic on the Exetel Forums for details, and if you are suffering this problem, see this post to download the firmware upgrade.
Here's the note from Netcomm on if your modem is one affected by this problem:
- Make sure that your NB5 modem is a Rev2 modem by checking the sticker underneath the unit. Rev2 Unit will state “NB5Rev2” and the “F/W” will start with “2.A09NCT”

Netcomm NetcommNB5 routers include a very basic firewall that helps protect your home network form unwanted access from the internet. Since this firewall blocks incoming connections you may need open a port through it for certain games and applications. This process of opening a port is frequently called a port forward, since you are forwarding a port from the internet to your home network.
The basic process to open a port is:
- Setup a static IP address on either your computer or device that you want to forward a port to.
- Login to your Netcomm NB5 router.
- Navigate to the port forwarding section.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click on Port Forwarding.
- Click the Custom Rules button.
- Create a port forward entry.

While these steps might seem difficult at first, we will walk you through each step for your Netcomm NetcommNB5 router.
We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.
When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!
Step 1
It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.
- Recommended - Our free program will setup a static IP address for you.
- → Download Network Utilities today!
- Or follow our Static IP Address guides to setup a static IP address.
After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Step 2
Now we are going to login to your Netcomm NetcommNB5 router. Your router has a web interface, so you will login to it using your web browser. This can be either Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Edge. It usually does not matter which browser you choose to use.
Open up your web browser and find the address bar. It should look something like this:
In the picture above the address bar has 192.168.1.1 in it. Just replace all of that with the IP address of your Netcomm NetcommNB5 router.Your router's IP address can also be refered to as your computer's default gateway.
By default the IP address is set to: 192.168.1.1
After entering the IP address of your router you can simply press enter. If all goes well you will see the following screen:
You should see a box prompting you for your username and password.
- The Default Netcomm NB5 Router Username is: admin
- The Default Netcomm NB5 Router Password is: admin
Enter your username and password, and then click the Login button to log in to your Netcomm NetcommNB5 router.
Netcomm Usernames and Passwords
If your username and password do not work then please visit our Default Netcomm Router Passwords page.
If you still can't login to your router because you forgot your Netcomm NetcommNB5 router username and password, use our How to Reset a Router Password guide to set your Netcomm NetcommNB5 router back to its factory settings.
Step 3
Now we need to find the port forwarding section in your router. Here's how you do it. Starting from the first page in your router:
Click the Advanced button near the top of the page.
The menu on the left should change. In this new menu, click Port Forwarding.
Click the Custom Rules button near the center of the page.
Step 4
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
TCP Ports: | 3074 |
UDP Ports: | 3074 |
If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:
- Browsing our List of Games
- Check out our our List of Games by Genre
- See our List of all Applications
Choose an available connection from the Connection dropdown box.
Verify that you have the Enable checkbox checked.
Enter the name of the program into the Application box. It doesn't really matter what you put into this box, but something that will remind you why these ports are being forwarded is be a good idea.
Select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding from the Protocol box.
Try entering 192.168.1.1 into the Source IP Address box. The numbers 192.168.1.1 stand for any assigned IP address. When you enter that number it means whatever external IP address has been assigned to my router. If that does not work you have to enter your external IP address manually. This may be a problem because your external IP address can change. When it changes these ports will not be forwarded properly.
Type 192.168.1.1 into the Source Netmask box.
Enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to in the Destination IP Address box. This is either the IP address of a computer or the IP address of another device on your network.
Make sure that Destination Netmask is set to 192.168.1.1.

If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the Destination Port Map, Destination Port Start and the Destination Port End boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Destination Port Map, Destination Port Start box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the Destination Port End box.
Click the Apply button when you are done.
Select the applications you just created in the Available Rules list, then click the Add > button to move them to the Applied Rules box.
