The growing number of turn-key projects and the benefits of handling contracts across borders have ensured IAV’s status as a center of excellence.
Current CO2 regulations are the key technological driver in developing future commercial vehicles. IAV is meeting this challenge of consumption-optimized overall concepts by taking a closely integrated, cross-disciplinary view of all vehicle systems. Doing so, we always take into account the local requirements of our international customers.
The market for commercial vehicles will undergo radical change. Transport volumes are expected to continue rising in the future, with the demands on transport becoming more fragmented, also as a result of growing e-commerce and individualization in end customer sales. Against this backdrop, commercial-vehicle manufacturers will need to offer flexible and cost-effective solutions. At the same time, there is an increasing lack of drivers in the logistics sector, the figure being several tens of thousands in Germany alone. This means it is also a question of making the truck driver’s workplace more attractive. Assist systems and a higher level of automation can help to do this.
Particularly high growth rates can be expected for China and Eastern Europe but also for South America, although targets in the commercial-vehicle market are far more heterogeneous than they are in the passenger car segment. Some markets are defined almost exclusively by operating costs whereas in others emission legislation plays the decisive part. Today, the technical challenge lies in finding suitable, highly efficient and economical solutions for the world’s widely differing boundary conditions.
“We have all the necessary disciplines on board and offer our customers solutions on a one-stop-shop basis – from concept to production-ready commercial vehicles.”
— Senior Vice President Commercial Vehicles
Currently, the main technological driver in developing commercial vehicles is the CO2 emission limit which target 15 percent by 2025 and then 30 percent by 2030. It is also going to be necessary to cope with other emissions challenges as a result of the new Euro 7 and CARB Ultra-Low NOx which still have to be defined in detail. Depending on the specific application, powertrain concepts will be more widely diversified in the future, with electric drives taking center stage in urban areas. But fuel cells, hydrogen and gaseous-fuel engines as well as synthetic fuels are also of interest for commercial vehicles.
IAV can provide its customers worldwide with services that enable them to meet local emission requirements. Given our global international alignment, we always have our own experts on location, and can offer our customers competent advice in connection with regional requirements and applications. At our sites we use state-of-the-art development tools and methods. As experienced specialists we can take on turnkey development packages and, if required, connect our OEM customers with the right component suppliers for their project.
We have demonstrated our proficiency in numerous volume production projects for well-known OEMs. As today’s powertrains already provide a very high level of efficiency, achieving further fuel savings will involve the entire vehicle, for example by using waste heat recovery. Another technological approach to reducing CO2 emissions is to use engines running on CNG or LNG. As a current trend, we also see hydrogen in the combustion engine in the near future, and thus a third concept in addition to battery-electric drive and fuel cell, which is expected to be classified as a “zero emission vehicle”. Providing a better carbon footprint, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to twenty percent over diesel engines. Synthetic fuels from renewable energies also offer great potential as future energy sources.
We are meeting the current challenges with virtual development processes and model-based development: this is where we are “best in class”. Our test facilities are high end: in Germany alone, IAV has over forty engine test benches (seven of them for heavy duty). In the USA, there are four engine test benches. Added to this are component test benches and special-purpose test benches, among others for turbochargers, injection systems and exhaust gas aftertreatment.
